It is a basket making kind of day and as I work, often I think about the person who decides the one I am working on needs to be their own.
But today, as I work on a basket for the Battle Ground Art Alliance Spring Show, my mind kept wandering back to school days as an elementary principal. In the Spring time with testing over, I taught baskets classes to intermediate students. It took over a week with five to six classrooms. One year especially stands out in my mind. An amazing, hard working student who just happened to qualify for special education showed great skill in basket making. Luckily, she was in the first class I taught that year. She became my assistant teacher, and she helped other students create beautiful work!
I saw her mom recently. Of course this amazing student graduated years ago. Mom reports that she is working, living on her own, and being successful. Such a great memory!
